The Marine Corps Scholarship Dinner is the signature Marine event in our city established to benefit the Foundation's expanded commitment to educate every child of gravely wounded Marines and Navy Corpsmen with educational opportunities that otherwise would not exist. The need is exemplified by the recent service of the 3rd Battalion 5th Marines, which just came home from Helmand province, Afghanistan.
The 950 strong battalion suffered 25 killed in action and approximately 150 wounded. Of the wounded, over a dozen lost one or more limbs - all this in a single seven-month tour. These devastating injuries affect families for decades by limiting a veteran's employment and ability to afford a college education for his/her children. As the number of serious battlefield wounds mounts, the efforts of the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation become ever more critical. Established 50 years ago, the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation has made an important impact on Marine families all across the country. This year alone, the Scholarship Foundation is awarding almost $5,000,000, including vital support to more than 200 students in Illinois and surrounding states. By helping these kids receive an education, we give them a better chance to succeed in life and pay back a small fraction of the debt we owe the brave men and women who defend our freedom.
This dinner offers a meaningful way to help while making America stronger through a college-educated workforce of motivated Marine children - children who graduate at a rate of 50% higher than the nation's average. It is our hope that you will join us in support of this special cause. Together, we can honor those Marines who have sacrificed so much for us in perhaps the most meaningful way possible - by educating their sons and daughters.
