Proceeds from Phoenix Musical to Help Educate Children of Marines

Jan. 13, 2020
A new Phoenix musical production not only pays homage to the Marine Corps, but is also dedicating a portion of its proceeds toward educating the children of Marines.

Americano! Runs Jan. 29 through Feb. 23 at the Phoenix Theater Company. Producers are partnering with the non-profit Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation on several initiatives.

Foundation volunteers will host a table at many of the performances to promote the organization and the official Arizona Marine Corps license plate. Seventeen dollars from the sale of each plate goes to the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation, which provides educational assistance to the children of Marines and Navy Corpsmen who served with Marines.

The Foundation will also be recognized during the Feb. 5 production of Americano! Twenty percent of the proceeds from that show will be dedicated to the Foundation and Foundation national director (Ret.) Marine Lt. Gen. Robert Ruark be on hand to introduce the show.

Finally, a portion of proceeds from the sale of the musical’s CD will also be donated to the Foundation.
A pivotal song in the musical is entitled, “Come Join the Marines.” The production company for Americano! will give the Foundation 100 percent of the publisher’s share of download revenues for that song for one year.

The Foundation will also get a portion of the profits from the album sales.

Americano! tells the real-life story of Tony Valdovinos, whose parents brought him to the U.S. from Mexico when he was 2 years old. Tony did not know that until his 18th birthday when he tried to fulfill his dream of serving his country by joining the U.S. Marines. Denied that opportunity, Tony’s disappointment propelled him in a different direction. He became a community activist and has helped elect countless Arizona candidates, including Marine veteran Ruben Gallego to the U.S. Congress.

Throughout his career, Valdovinos embraced the values of Marines – honesty, integrity and the determination not to give up.

“In a way, the MCSF donation helps bring some resolution to my journey,” said Valdovinos. “Not able to serve this country by joining the Marines, the telling of my story will honor those who served by enabling the sons and daughters of Marines to realize the promise of a college education.”

If You Can, You Must Scholarship Initiative

More than 14 years ago, Dakota Meyer, a U.S. Marine serving in the War in Afghanistan, risked his life to bravely save the lives of U.S. and Afghan forces in the Battle of Ganjgal. For his actions, he was awarded the Medal of Honor, the first living Marine in more than forty years to receive the award. Since leaving active duty, Dakota has embraced opportunities for continued service. Through his partnership with the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation, the “If You Can, You Must” Scholarship will provide educational scholarships to the children of Marines and inspire the future leaders of America.
