Snell & Wilmer Chair Matthew P. Feeney to be Honored with Service Above Self Award BY Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation

PHOENIX (January 23, 2023) – Snell & Wilmer is pleased to announce that Firm Chair Matthew P. Feeney will be honored with the Service Above Self Award by the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation (MCSF) at the 12th Annual Arizona Celebratory Dinner on May 20, 2023. The award recognizes an individual or individuals who serve others without expectation of reward, whose pattern of service is to give unselfishly to their fellow man with thoughtfulness and helpfulness while putting the needs of others before their own. Recipients of this award look beyond themselves to serve fellow citizens through a continued commitment and philanthropic efforts to better the community.

Established in 1962, MCSF is the nation’s oldest and largest provider of need-based scholarships for military children. Since its inception, MCSF has provided over 50,000 scholarships valued at more than $185 million to the children of Marines and Navy Corpsmen. Feeney has supported MCSF for many years and often remembers his father’s honorable service with the Marine Corps in the Pacific during World War II. In 2015, Feeney also accepted the Secretary of Defense Freedom Award at the Pentagon on behalf of Snell & Wilmer, recognizing the firm’s support of its national guard and military reserve members.

Among his many professional awards, Feeney has consistently been recognized by The Best Lawyers in America©, including as Lawyer of the Year, Securities Law/Capital Markets Law (2015); Lawyer of the Year, Corporate Governance Law (2018); and Lawyer of the Year, Mergers & Acquisitions Law (2012); Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business® (2004-2022); and Southwest Super Lawyers, Mergers & Acquisitions (2007-2021).

Feeney has been involved in numerous civic and charitable organizations, including serving as a board member and president of the Arizona Foundation for Legal Services & Education, which was created by the State Bar of Arizona to promote access to justice for all Arizonans. At Snell & Wilmer, he helped to develop a formal pro bono policy for the firm in the late 1980s under which attorneys receive billable hour credit for legal services to low-income individuals. Feeney was honored in 2014 by the American Jewish Committee with the Judge Learned Hand Community Service Award, where he was recognized for demonstrating sustained contributions to the advancement of equality and democratic principles. Feeney also serves as chair of the Sandra Day O’Connor Institute for American Democracy and the Arizona Equal Justice Foundation and serves on the Notre Dame Law School Advisory Council.

If You Can, You Must Scholarship Initiative

More than 14 years ago, Dakota Meyer, a U.S. Marine serving in the War in Afghanistan, risked his life to bravely save the lives of U.S. and Afghan forces in the Battle of Ganjgal. For his actions, he was awarded the Medal of Honor, the first living Marine in more than forty years to receive the award. Since leaving active duty, Dakota has embraced opportunities for continued service. Through his partnership with the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation, the “If You Can, You Must” Scholarship will provide educational scholarships to the children of Marines and inspire the future leaders of America.
